History     History of the BPU Banca Group

The BPU Group was formed on 1 July 2003 from the merger of the Banca Popolare di Bergamo-Credito Varesino and Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria Groups.

The original Groups

The banks that gave rise to the BPU Banca have a history that goes back further than a hundred years. They have contributed since the unification of Italy until today to the birth and development of many local economies, at the service of families and businesses to help them reach their goals of growth and well-being

  • Banca Popolare di Bergamo-Credito Varesino
    1869 - Creation of Banca Mutua Popolare della Città e Provincia di Bergamo
    1992 - Change in name to Banca Popolare di Bergamo-Credito Varesino following the merger with Credito Varesino; listing on the Milan Stock Exchange (first popular bank to be listed)
    1994 - Acquisition of Banque de Dépôts et de Gestion (Switzerland) and of the insurance companies (today UBI Assicurazioni and UBI Assicurazioni Vita)
    1996 - Creation of the "Gruppo Banca Popolare di Bergamo-CV" following the acquisition of the control of Banca Popolare di Ancona (and of its subsidiary Banca Popolare di Todi)
    2000 - Acquisition of Centrobanca and creation of Banca 24-7 and Mercato Impresa
    2002 - Creation of BPB Prumerica (now UBI Pramerica), international joint venture in the asset management sector with Prudential Financial USA

  • Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria
    1888 - Creation of the "Società Anonima Cooperativa per la Stagionatura e l'Assaggio delle Sete ed Affini", which becomes a banking institute and changes its name to "Banca per il Commercio Serico" in 1921, "Banca Commercio e Industria" in 1953 and "Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria" in 1975.  
    As from 1963 the Bank grows through a number of acquisitions and incorporations of banking institutes (among which Cassa San Alessandro di Bergamo, Banca Toljia, Banca Popolare di Cotogno, Credito Lodigiano, Banca Popolare di Vigevano) and of branches of Italian and foreign banks.
    1996 - Creation of the "Gruppo Bancario Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria" following the  acquisition of the control of Banca Popolare di Luino e Varese
    1998: listing on the Milan Stock Exchange and creation of Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria International Sa - Luxembourg
    2001 - Acquisition of the controlling stake in Banca Carime
    2002 - creation of an international joint venture in the life bancassurance sector with the Aviva Group UK, named Aviva Vita Spa.

The Group Banche Popolari Unite
1 July 2003 - Merger between Banca Popolare di Bergamo-Credito Varesino and  Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria  for the creation of a new popular Group, named Banche Popolari Unite - BPU Banca
2004 - Extension of the operations of Aviva Vita e di BPU Pramerica to the Gruppo BPU Banca        
2005-2006 - Disposal of the Carifano banking subsidiary and launch of a Public Offer on the residual capital of Banca Popolare di Ancona. Incorporation of Banca Popolare di Todi in Banca Popolare di Ancona. Merger between BPU Leasing and Esaleasing, to create BPU Esaleasing.
2007 - Integration with the Gruppo Banca Lombarda e Piemontese and change of name into Unione di Banche Italiane - UBI Banca
